Children's Books on Tour 2023 - Autumn Collection
As Oscar Wilde once said, “The best way to make children good is to make them happy” – and we cannot think of a better medium than books to do just that! With our bi-annual Children’s Books on Tour Collection we introduce new titles written in German and predominantly, though not exclusively, for younger readers. That’s the point of the Children’s Books on Tour Collection: to help ensure that stories are not limited by borders.

We human beings go into the forest to experience nature, but we often behave loudly and carelessly. How would a woodland animal perceive us? This richly illustrated book allows children and adults to experience the forest through the eyes and ears of a vixen. We accompany her through one whole year of her life. We learn how she hunts, eats, communicates, marks her territory, brings up her young, and finally, how she experiences human beings.

This large atlas showcases 120 animals from around the world. In Africa, hyenas, elephants and okapis say good night. In the USA, the whistling hare is wary of the poisonous diamond-backed rattle snake, while in the north, the grizzly fishes for salmon. The fact that wombats have cube-shaped poo and that the opossum carries all her babies around with her are examples of the many exciting and funny facts it contains.
Katrin Wiehle lives in the USA, where she does freelance illustration for a wide range of clients. In 2011, she received the Newcomer Award from the German Academy for Children's and Youth Literature, and her picture book debut Professor Pfeffer's Animal Adventure and the nature book My Little Forest also won awards from the Stiftung Buchkunst.

Racoon wants to go down to the sea, so he borrows a boat from Badger. But because one should never go on such a trip alone, Badger is happy to come along. On the way, they pick up Fox, who packs the eggs for their omelette, and Bear and Crow as well. They tumble through rapids, collect wild mushrooms and sweet blackberries, chase the bees away and enjoy a wonderfully lazy day - until homesickness takes hold of them.
In a quiet and light tone, Waechter explains that you don't have to go all that far away to experience a fantastic trip around the world.

Artificial intelligence finds funny videos for us, plays our favourite song on command and answers questions. It is everywhere in our everyday lives, in our mobile phones, voice assistants and navigation systems. And it can do much more: teach itself things, read emotions based on vocal and facial expressions, and recognize illnesses. This is fascinating, but sometimes also scary. Those who understand how it works can use it mindfully.

Nate is a near-sighted octopus. Because he's so shy, he barely ever leaves his cave – until the day he wakes up to find his favorite arm has worked itself into a terrible knot! Nate ventures out into the open sea to look for help … and soon encounters Shelly Shrimp. Along the way, anxious Nate learns a lot from other animals. In the process, he learns that life is an adventure to be experienced. This expressive picture book illustrates that nothing is impossible if we are brave enough to face our fears, show compassion and acceptance, and be true to our feelings.
Nothing makes Julia Regett happier than creating. In addition to illustrating books, she enjoys working in a shared studio space and designing her own postcards. »Kick Up a Fuss, Nate Knottopus!« is her second children’s book with CalmeMara. Her debut title »Little By Little Goes a Long Way« is also available.

Chatty hens pecking for food, happy pigs wallowing in the mud, and peaceful cows grazing in sunny pastures. This idyllic scene depicts the life every animal deserves. But the reality is often much harsher. The animal sanctuary Sentana Village in Bielefeld, Germany, is a place where former “working” livestock are allowed to retire and live out the rest of their lives in peace. The primary goal of this incredibly detailed picture book is to show that every living being – whether human or animal – deserves respect. It is a colourful reminder to all of us of what animal welfare can and should look like. All without wagging a critical finger, of course.
Katharina Staar studied illustration and art education. Her work has been awarded the German Piepenbrock Art Funding Prize and the German Ravensburger illu2017 prize. She also teaches art to children, young people and adults.

Das Glücksschwein sucht das Glück / A Pig´s Pursuit of Happiness

This lucky pig does not feel lucky at all. It always makes sure that everyone else finds their luck, but it never seems to be able to do that for itself. And so it wonders: what will it take to make myself happy? Ladybug, Lucky Fairy and Chimney Sweep are clueless, too. But then the Lucky Charms get lucky! When they meet little Felix, he shows them that happiness can be found in the smallest of clovers in the field. An artfully illustrated picture book with an important message: happiness looks different for each and every one of us. What makes you happy?
Dorothee Eva Herrmann, also known to her avid young fans as Fairy Doro, conjures up stories with her bundle of magic pens. Plenty in life makes her happy: her family, cat Lillie, fairy tales, a boundless imagination, dancing, colours, harp music, the scent of roses, and the sea.

At summer camp, Kemi becomes a member of a group of very diverse adolescents and counselors. He meets Jörg, who's somehow even more different, but who Kemi finds very interesting. Kemi observes how the others treat Jörg and how developments within the group slowly escalate. How far? In his dreams, he encounters a wolf, his own fear. He learns to live with the wolf and to be courageous.
Wolf is a keenly observed children's novel about just how fine the line between being different and being ostracized is.
