Children's Books on Tour - Spring 2024

Thinking outside the box, telling good stories, sparking the imagination, broadening horizons, or explaining the diversity of the world. Books can do all these things and many, many more. Because good books help us to grow better.

With nearly 50 new German-language titles for all age groups from very young children to young adults, the Frankfurter Buchmesse’s Children’s Books on Tour Collection will be travelling the world again this year.

German children’s and young adult books are very much in demand among international licensees and a real export hit for German publishers, being the top selling foreign rights category.

Children are explorers, quick learners and whizz through (almost) everything in their first years. Kathrin Schärer presents 30 everyday activities, using vivid animal illustrations, that even the smallest children can do if given the inspiration and confidence. Getting up in the morning, getting dressed and having breakfast? No problem! Building a sandcastle, doing crafts or browsing a book? Why not? Cutting cookies, going to the bathroom or climbing a tree? I want to do it on my own! And soon riding a scooter or throwing a ball will be a breeze. Great fun to discover together and learn playfully – for small and slightly bigger whizz-kids.

There is always something going on in this lively class! Adam starts a new school after his parents move from Poland to Germany. Luckily, he quickly makes friends because all his classmates are from different places. Or as Mrs Meister, the class teacher, says, “With us, you can travel all over the world without even leaving the classroom!” Whether it’s a lively museum trip, a school event where a mouse turns up or a slumber party with ghost stories, Adam, Mariam, Yanis and their friends never get bored. And Mrs Meister has the best ideas. Like building a stegosaurus, which is not that easy because dinosaurs are huge. But one thing is crystal clear: whatever happens, this class always sticks together.

The fascination of construction equipment – discover, laugh and dig along. Children like digging and building things. Large construction machines are particularly fascinating. In illustrated texts, Ole Könnecke explains what excavators, rollers and tracked trucks do, as well as tippers and cranes, loaders and lorries. His stories are tongue-in-cheek and there’s always an animal along for the ride. An original picture book that combines information and humour in a very entertaining way.

For Theo, Tom and Lotti, every day is an adventure. In their imaginations they are desperadoes, explorers, knights and superheroines. A cat becomes a dangerous tiger and the neighbour’s garden a jungle. Which, as it so happens, belongs to an elderly lady – the fearless Frederike, who is not afraid of bees or chickens. But one day a man in shiny black shoes shows up – and he’s got Frederike’s house in his sights. The three siblings can’t let him get away with this, of course. In other words: there’s adventure everywhere. You just have to look carefully. And always carry a water pistol … just in case!

Christina Röckl, winner of the German Award for Youth Literature, recounts a day inside a bus using a blaze of colours. Almost completely without words, she depicts the small things that can make the world dance, showing us how much we can accomplish with one tiny impulse – just a simple smile. Christina Röckl tells stories with pictures, mostly in the shape of books. Her published works have won a number of awards.

Business is quiet at Alberta’s secondhand shop in a little seaside town. One day, however, a man desperately searching for a parking space triggers gossip that there is something extra-special about Alberta’s shop. People come flooding in, each with their own particular request: a chair with a long back and short legs, a grumpy cloud, more pepper in their life, an inflatable dumbbell. Alberta darts eagerly back and forth among the crowded shelves, looking for a fitting item – and she always comes up with the right answer. Then one day Alberta’s most loyal customer, Pepe the fisherman, comes to town again and asks her a question that changes everything.

Alula Cover

The Garden / The Jungle

Children’s games open a door into a fantastic world we will call Alula, a place full of adventures and surprises,...

Children’s games open a door into a fantastic world we will call Alula, a place full of adventures and surprises, danger and exotic creatures. Alula is also a special kind of word – a palindrome. Read it backwards and see! Two children are tracking a cat – or is it an exotic butterfly they’re following? In this reversible book without words, Reto Crameri gives two different versions of a daring expedition. One story shows two children playing in a garden. They spot a cat and then follow it through long grass past a hose, along a washing line and flowerbeds, to a pond. Read the book the other way around, though, and an innocent garden hunt becomes an intrepid journey through thick jungle. The cat turns into a colourful butterfly, the hose becomes a giant snake and instead of moving hand over hand along a washing line, the children swing through the air on long vines. The charming illustrations offer a creative take on the role of imagination in children’s play.

Sparse words and beautiful images tell the story of a special bond between a girl and her grandmother. The two of them go ballooning, visit a museum and take a stroll through town. Even when the girl is on her own, she thinks of her grandmother whenever she wears her special sweater. The garment symbolises the close and happy relationship between the two, and gives solace as a difficult farewell looms. She keeps her sweater for many years before handing it down to her own son, hoping he will feel as loved, cosy and warm as she once did, while collecting his own memories and adventures.

A non-fiction and hands-on activity book for young scientists and philosophers alike. Time – what is it really? Is it what clocks measure? The passing of hours, days and years? Or a feeling? This book gets to the bottom of the phenomenon of time. In addition to clear explanations, this book features numerous experiments and crafting instructions: the perpetual calendar shows the basis of our calendar system. With the help of the sundial, children learn how the length of the day was measured and how clocks as we know them today came into being. A water clock or an ancestor chart can also be built with the help of this book. The phenomenon of time can be demystified and felt, no longer intangible.
