The Ecology of Publishing
Half a century ago, the Club of Rome published its first ecological report, stating that unlimited growth on a limited planet will end in disaster. The global climate crisis, the first effects of which became noticeable as early as the 1970s, is essentially a crisis of the existing forms of production, distribution, and consumption. Today, we need to find ways to produce and consume that will work on our planet, something that will require cultural as well as economic change.
The book as an information carrier creates a separate system, an environment that is a collective responsibility of all publishers and which they can influence with their decisions. What do they need to do in order to continue using one of the most reliable means of information responsibly in the future?
