Doris Mühringer’s poetic story, masterfully illustrated by Michaela Weiss, follows Emilie, a tiny fly. One evening, she settles on a thumb to clean herself. Small as a grain of rice and remarkably unafraid, she stays put even when the thumb moves – she hasn’t yet learned to fear humans. A tender tale that transcends age.

Doris Mühringer (1920–2009) was a major Austrian poet. Renowned for her minimalist style, she received the Georg Trakl Prize (1954) and the Austrian State Prize for Children’s Literature (2001).

Michaela Weiss, born 1981, is a Vienna-based illustrator. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and in London (Central Saint Martins/Chelsea College). Her work is recognized by several prestigious book art grants.

Two passions emerged early on in Nina Weger’s life: writing and the circus. At the age of 13, she began dancing tightrope in a children’s circus and toured as a professional tightrope walker for a year after leaving school. Italy, Catania: Thirteen-year-old Lucia leads an ordinary life – until one day, a burning flame awakens inside her and sparks literally fly from her hands. That alone would be trouble enough, since fire magic has long been forbidden. But soon, eerie fog creatures begin to hunt her.

With her sharp-tongued fire salamander Yuki and the mysterious Finn at her side, Lucia escapes through a hidden portal into Flamaris – the once-radiant Land of Fire, now shrouded in thick mist and shadow. As danger draws ever closer, Lucia must face not only the secrets of Flamaris, but also the truth about her own past …

When forbidden fire awakens within her, Lucia is thrust into a burning adventure between worlds – where mist hides monsters, and her greatest power might also be her greatest secret.
