Berlin, late 19th century. Seventeen-year-old Florentine Falkenberg, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, has two great passions: medicine and criminology. But as a woman, she is not allowed to study. Undeterred, she disguises herself in men’s clothing to secretly attend lectures at the hospital.

Her academic pursuits take an unexpected turn when she finds herself not in the dissection room, but at her cousin Charlotte’s house, facing a real corpse. The victim is none other than Charlotte’s newlywed husband, Amandus. The case is particularly scandalous because Florentine’s brother harbours a secret love for Charlotte and was near the scene of the crime at the time of the murder. Florentine seizes the opportunity: she will uncover the true culprit and clear her family’s name of disgraceful rumours!

Her picture book Wo ist Theatrine? was awarded the Leipziger Lesekompass 2022, and her translation of Monika Vaicenaviciené’s poetic non-fiction picture book Was ist ein Fluss? was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize 2023.

Kathrin Fehrl is a designer and illustrator from Münster. After studying communication design, she moved to London. She now works as a freelance illustrator for children’s books and magazines.
