German Stories At Salone del Libro di Torino

18 – 22 May 2023

In advance of Italy’s Guest of Honour appearance at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2024, we are inviting four great German-language authors to the international book fair in Turin: Salone del Libro di Torino.

Esther Kinsky, Eva Menasse, Antje Rávik Strubel and Andreas Weber will talk about wounds – in the Earth and in the souls of people whether due to earthquake-related tremors or historical guilt – as well as about the struggle for personal integrity and the art of making compromises.

All events will be accompanied by German-Italian interpreters.

The Turin International Book Fair or Salone del Libro di Torino is the oldest and largest book fair in Italy, held annually in mid-May in Turin. It attracts more than 1,000 exhibitors and 175,000 visitors every year. 30 event forums invite you to participate in lively debates and talks.

Author meeting ROMBO

Esther Kinsky talks with Vincenzo Latronico

On 6 May 1976, Friuli was shaken by a violent earthquake that destroyed the landscape and the livelihood of its inhabitants. A valley in the far north-east of the region was particularly affected – an area of legends in which the earthquake was associated with the monstrous Orcolat and the Riba Faronika, a powerful siren with two tails. In the book Rombo, Ester Kinsky juxtaposes the human voices remembering an ancient world with the voices of nature in this karst landscape; a tale of the precarity of existence, the deep meaning of memory, and the emergence of a "memory of destruction".
