The Secret to Success: Children’s Books in Hungary and Germany

Discussion
English/German/Hungarian

A discussion of current Hungarian and German children’s books, exploring the similarities and differences between the two book markets. What trends are shaping children’s publishing in Hungary and Germany today? Which challenges do publishers, authors and illustrators face, and how are they responding to changing reading habits and market conditions? The discussion will also examine the international appeal of German children’s books and consider what makes them particularly successful with Hungarian readers. Through examples from both markets, the panellists will explore how stories cross borders, how children’s publishing can foster cultural exchange, and which qualities are essential for a children’s book to stand out and succeed.
The discussion will feature Eszter Balázs of Lampion Books, Esther Mallm of Fischer Sauerländer, and Sylvia Schuster of Carlsen. Simultaneous interpretation into German and Hungarian will be provided.
