International Book Festival Budapest 2026

Fair
The Hungarian Publishers and Booksellers Association organises the 31st International Book Festival Budapest between October 01 and 04, 2026.
This is one of the most important cultural events in Hungary with ca. 70.000 visitors. It is considered an important meeting by publishers, authors and readers as well, since almost the entire Hungarian book industry is represented here. Hundreds of interesting programs, interviews, conversations, and book signings are held over the course of four days.

The stands of international exhibitors and the discussions with the authors of the country of honour – which this year will be represented by three countries for German-language literature: Austria, Germany, and Switzerland – all contribute to a vibrant, international atmosphere at the Festival.

The guest of honour author at this year's Book Festival is Colm Tóibín, who will receive the Budapest Grand Prize from the Mayor of Budapest.

Tóibín is an acclaimed contemporary Irish novelist, essayist, and critic, whose works frequently explore themes of exile, family relationships, and Irish identity. He is best known for his novels Brooklyn (which was adapted into a successful film), The Magician, and Long Island. His writing is celebrated for its understated, elegant style and deep psychological insight.

The Hungarian translation of Tóibín's novel The Magician will be released for the festival, which happens to focus on the life of Thomas Mann, one of the greatest figures of German literature in world history.

Moreover, a Rights Corner will exist during the four days of the Festival. We kindly invite you to participate and to get in contact with publishers from Hungary and neighbouring Central European countries. The participation at the rights corner is free of charge and is also open to those who are not exhibitors at the Festival.

German Collective Stand

Following the success of our previous joint appearances, we are delighted to return to the 31st International Book Festival Budapest between October 01 and 04, 2026, with a German Collective Stand.

Austria, Germany and Switzerland will be the Guests of Honour at the 31st International Book Festival Budapest, presenting a diverse programme featuring some of the most exciting voices in contemporary German-language literature. A special focus will be placed on authors with Hungarian roots and Hungarian-German perspectives, whose work builds literary and cultural bridges between the two countries.

Among the invited authors are Katja Brandis, Stefanie Höfler, Martin Korte, Martina Hefter, Eugen Ruge, Sarah Welk, Dimitré Dinev, Tonio Schachinger, Johanna Sebauer, Daniel Wisser, Christian Kracht, Kristina Moninger, Melinda Nadj Abonji, and Nelio Biedermann.

The festival programme highlights the richness and diversity of contemporary German-language literature, with a particular emphasis on novels exploring themes such as family memory, history, migration, identity, minority experiences and pressing social issues. The programme also includes children's and young adult literature as well as popular science titles.

Visitors can look forward to readings, panel discussions, literary conversations and many inspiring opportunities to meet authors and fellow book lovers from around the world.

The full programme will be announced soon.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Budapest!

Please note that photographs and video recordings will be taken during the event.

Please contact Claudia Dobry-Schneider (dobry-schneider@buchmesse.de) if you have any questions about this project.
