Nino Haratischwili

Nino Haratischwili (*1983) is an award-winning playwright, director, and novelist from Tbilisi, Georgia. Her early involvement in theatre resulted in her leadership of the German-Georgian theatre group Fliedertheater. After studying film directing at the State School of Film and Theatre in Tbilisi, Haratischwili studied theatre directing at the Theaterakademie Hamburg from 2003 to 2007, where she has lived since 2003. In her family epic Das achte Leben (Für Brilka) [Engl. The Eighth Life (for Brilka)] published in 2014, Haratischwili depicts the rise and fall of communism from the pre-revolutionary period to post-cold war Europe. The novel is told from the perspective of a Georgian family that is entangled in and at odds with the totalitarianisms, tragedies and upheavals of the 20th century. The book became an international bestseller and has been translated into numerous languages. The Czech translation by Michaela Škultéty was published by Host.

The author's most recent book, The Cat and the General, deals with the Chechen conflict and the relationships between perpetrators and victims. It was shortlisted for the German Book Prize 2018. For her exceptional contribution to literature, Nino Haratischwili received the Schiller Memorial Prize in 2019.
