Hans Jürgen Balmes (*1958 in Koblenz), Editor-At-Large, joined S. Fischer in 1999. Before he worked for Carl Hanser Verlag in Munich and Ammann Verlag in Switzerland. At Fischer he works with authors like Arundhati Roy, Sharon Dodua Otoo, Warsan Shire, Richard Powers, or J. M. Coetzee. He coedits the literary journal Neue Rundschau and translates the books of John Berger. Since he is born at the river, he published “The Rhine. Biography of a River”.
