Works as translator
What are your main focuses and goals?
My focus for translations is on social issues as well as literature with pacifist themes. I am also interested in the history of the Second World War and its consequences, especially in Germany.
The political situation in the region around Iran is not stable, there is a constant threat of war and often people, especially the younger generation who have not experienced war, are not aware of its consequences. One of my goals is to educate people about the consequences of war for a country and its inhabitants.
What I also love to translate are biographies. Reading the biographies of German-speaking writers and philosophers gives readers personal experiences and historical as well as cultural information about the German cultural sphere.
In my opinion, translators are not only "language mediators" but also "culture mediators". They introduce the people of their own country to the literature, culture and customs of other countries, and the translated works in turn become a source of inspiration for local writers. In this way, translators play an important role in the dialogue of civilisations. Translating works into other languages brings people closer together and that is my most important and real goal.
So far I have translated over 60 books. In Iran, most of them were first translations. It is a great concern of mine to introduce the new generation of German-speaking authors to Iranian readers.
What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?
I would especially like to meet translators from other countries and exchange experiences. I would use the participation in the events that take place during the book fair for my own further education. I would like to establish contacts with German publishers in order to get the latest information on newly published books. And finally, I would be happy to just spend a few days in the world of books, authors and translating, which is not possible for me otherwise.
