kookbooks was founded in 2003 by poet Daniela Seel and graphic designer Andreas Töpfer as an extension of their own artistic work, and operates publishing as an artistic practice. Focus is on contemporary German-language poetry. kookbooks also champions essayistic and hybrid poetic forms as well as translations of contemporary poetry, sometimes supplemented by unusual illustrated children's books and art books. They have received multiple awards from the Stiftung Buchkunst (Book Art Foundation).
