After graduating with a degree in literary studies, Friederike Barakat (57) began her career as a proofreader at Knaur Taschenbuchverlag. She now heads the rights and licences department at Carl Hanser Verlag, and has been the publisher’s foreign rights director for over 25 years. Hanser is one of a handful of independent German trade publishers, with a diverse portfolio that includes picture books for pre-school children, children’s and YA fiction, wide-ranging contemporary literature from all over the world, a carefully curated selection of classics and poetry and a range of non-fiction works that, against the backdrop of the conflicts shaking the world today against the backdrop of today’s conflicts, inform and provoke discussion.
